How the six gift types differ, and why the occasion and the delivery constraint should choose the type before taste gets a vote.

Six types, and a better way to choose between them

Nearly everything South Africans order as a gift online falls into six types: flowers, hampers, cakes and sweet things, plants, personalised gifts, and drinks. Each has its own guides here, because each behaves differently: what it costs, how it travels, how long it lasts, and what it is allowed to say.

Most people choose the type first, on instinct or habit, and then get stuck choosing the thing. That is the wrong way round, because in practice the type is not really a matter of taste. It is decided by two facts you already have: the occasion and the delivery constraint.

The occasion narrows hard. Sympathy points to flowers or a plant, never balloons and rarely a bottle. A new baby points to soft, keepable things. A celebration you cannot attend points to a cake, if a cake can get there. A corporate thank-you points to something a team can share. Read the occasion honestly and half the types leave the table on their own.

The delivery constraint narrows the rest. A cake travels a short distance on a strict date or not at all. Chocolate struggles through a Highveld summer. A plant is patient but often only delivers locally. Alcohol needs an adult at the door. Personalised gifts need days you may not have. Flowers and hampers are the long-range generalists. Whatever the type, the shop’s own cut-offs, coverage and terms decide what is actually possible for your address and your date, so check those before your heart settles on anything.

Taste comes last, and by then it is easy: choosing between two bouquets is pleasant, choosing between six categories is paralysis. Start with the occasion, subtract what delivery rules out, and let taste decide only the finalists. The guides below take each type in turn: what it does well, where it fails, and how to buy it without regret.

the six types

What each one is actually good at.

Flowers

The default gift for most occasions here, and the one most often chosen badly.

Hampers

The right answer when you do not know their taste, and a cop-out when you do.

Cakes and sweet things

The most delivery-fragile gift on the list. The date matters more than usual.

Plants

Lasts far longer than flowers, but asks something of the person receiving it.

Personalised gifts

Cannot be returned, cannot be re-gifted, and needs a longer lead time.

Wine and spirits

The gift with the most ways to get it wrong, and age rules on delivery.
